The Presentation

Agata, Yasmine and myself created a presentation. Here I have the presentation which was on display on the smart board which we presented to our media class. Separately was the script which we created for ourselves to read in response to the slide show on the board.

The video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzYdtStk-b0&list=WL60A00BE094833C49&feature=mh_lolz

The next shot is again a mid close of another character using the mirror at a dressing table (the camera is behind the character but as the character is looking in the mirror we can see her face). The camera then flicks to the next shot of a mid of two characters. The next shot is a still mid of two characters using the camera lens as a mirror. A chorus line: Opening (1975)

The video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3QsVT5PNk0&feature=g-wl&context=G2af7be0AWAAAAAAABAA

Here I have analysed the opening of A chorus line (1975)

Location:On stage, in America.

Sound: Non diegetic, up beat tune, manager gives instructions on the microphone (diegetic) and stops shortly after music has started. Diegetic sound of dancers jumping and clapping as they are dancing and some dancing making noise e.g. "Woo!" and manager occassionally instructing moves.

Dress: Very colourful exercising clothes: Leotards, leg warmers, high heels, plimsolls, trainers, sweat bands, t-shirts, shorts, leggings, crop-tops etc

Props: Empty theatre, stage, stage set, stage props, managers desk, microphone, desk light, desk toy etc.

Camera: Close up of manager at desk, camera moves out through the back row of dancers until at front row of dancers, the camera then stops. The camera then shows the whole stage, including props and extra’s (stage lights etc) at the side of the stage from above angle, the camera then moves slowly forward to the front row and then stops, the camera then flicks to shot of manager from the front of managers desk and then back to a full shot of the stage followed by a close up of dancers feet while moving along and up to standing height of dancers focusing on two dancers in particular at a mid close view. The next shot is a little taller than standing height in front of dancers and moves forward and down to one person in particular and then to next shot of mid-close of another dancer and then to a shot above the stage from a right angle, most dancers are in the shot, the camera then moves across the stage and moves in focusing on one dancer in particular for a second before flicking to again another angled shot above the stage. The camera then moves to the front of stage, while following the movements of two dancers in particular at a close-mid view, the next shot is again the camera over the stage focusing on one dancer in particular out of sync, with the other dancers, the camera follows her walking of stage and then flicks to a close up of manager to catch his reaction and back to the dancer walking of stage and again back to the manager’s face. The camera then shows a mid close of dancers as camera moves sideways.

Storyline: The clip starts with manager sitting at a desk with a low lit background (desk lamp), giving instructions through microphone. As camera shows dancers on stage, dancers start dancing in sync with the camera moving around all the dancers sometimes focusing on certain dancers in particular. The camera focuses on one dancer in particular dancing out of sync and walking off the stage, the manager’s reaction to this is shown. As the camera flicks back to the dancers on stage, it focuses on the variation of shoes worn e.g. high heels, trainers, plimsolls or even the synchronised dancing. There is an emphasis on dancers reactions to the camera e.g. all the dancers are either smiling at the camera or even looking through the camera due to concentration of dancing there best.

Chicago: Opening (1975)

The Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjnjE66UGWY&feature=g-wl&context=G260d425AWAAAAAAAAAA

Here I have analysed the opening of the first musical: Chicago (1975)

Location: On stage, in Chicago (in the musical)

Sound: Diegetic music while actresses and actor sing.

Dress: Red suit for actor and white and purple lingerie with one black and red stocking for each actress.

Props:
Red surrounding stage, black theatre screens with rims of light bulbs, a cigar for the actor, and a hand feather hands for the actresses.

Camera: Mid shot of stage, camera zooms out as actresses disperse, camera follows movements of synchronised dancing, camera fades to still shot of dancers with an above the stage shot slightly to the right, fades into close- mid shot of the two characters in particular as they are sitting/ laying, the full body's are seen, the camera zooms out as the characters start dancing, the camera then stops as spotlight exposes a silhouette however, the next shot is a close-mid of the character and the camera follows the character walking towards the stage, the next shot is a full body shot of character and again zooms out as character moves forward and stops, the next shot is then a close-mid of the character, the camera then moves slowly following the character and moves with the character, the next shot fades into a a full body -mid of the character and moves with the character. As the character is moving the camera moves slightly forward. Next shot is the close-up of the character as the camera follows the movement of the character, a full body shot follows as the camera follows the characters movements, the camera then fades into a close up of character before flicking to a full body shot again andstill following the character, the camera then slowly moves towards the main character. the next shot is again a full body shot while following the character and slowly zooming out. The camera then moves back in slightly, then to a close up of the character again with the cameras following the characters movements, the ext shot is of all characters on the stage, as the characters move in, the camera zooms in and stops so that all characters are in view of the full body shot but main character's is in the middle of shot, the next shot is again a close up following the character, the camera than flicks back to a full body shot of all the characters on stage while following the character’s movements e.g. as character strep back, the camera zooms in, next shot is then again a close-up of character while following the character. The next short is a full-body shot following the character but then moves back as actresses spread out on stage and moves back as song finishes.

Storyline: The dancers start in a seductive pose and while moving slowly and singing "where is Billy?".The dancers are looking at the camera and audience at all times while singing. The dancers then spread across the stage slowly and move to a sitting position on the stage floor, the dance moves of the dancers are then in sync and move into a position laying on the floor stage, the camera then focuses on two characters in particular and as the dancers stand up while including dance moves the dancers split into two groups on both side of the stage. The stage screens move apart revealing a silhouette of someone standing from the side in a suit and hat, lighting a cigar. The spotlight shines on the mystery silhouette revealing a man wearing a red suit, a smart hat with a moustache smoking a cigar, he walks towards the centre of a stage. Addressing the audience and camera before singing, the dancers come back on stage with big coral feather fans and move around the main character. While singing to the audience the main character starts undressing and continues whistling and singing with the dancers surrounding him with the big coral feather fans, the main character undresses until in his underwear (vest and boxers) shortly after, the song finishes.

Mood Board

Here I have looked into existing musicals appealing to all audiences e.g. Chicago for the more mature, Hairspray for young people e.g. teenagers, and Shrek and Mary Poppins for the family. I have also looked into the common props used in musicals e.g. the microphone and sometimes a suitcase or map as it symbolises travelling. I have added a picture of London's Picadilly circus Tube station as a potential and realistic location to film in because of the musical production stages there.
